Looney Birds!

blue_looney

These birds are so ridiculous, they are adorable! They are ceramic, with thick wire for the legs and kookie feathers on their heads!

The bowls were thrown on a wheel, low fired at 1880 degrees, hand painted with underglazes, low fired a second time, hand painted with 3 coats of clear glaze, and low fired one last time. Each firing takes about 16 hours: 8 hours to heat up and reach temperature and then another 8 hours to cool down.

The body and head bird were hand built, fired, painted, and glazed, same as the bowls above.

The legs, quarter of an inch wire, were glued with epoxy into the tiny feet balanced on the bowl and then glued inside the bodies of the Looney! Finally, feathers were added. (The dollars help to determine size).

I made two for now. Lots of work, but great fun! These are both food and dish water safe.

Be sure to stop by the San Jon Art Gallery on 3rd and Ash this Saturday about 5:30 – 6:00.

Wine, cheese, and Loonies!

Another great evening on Amelia Island!
