ADULT BULLIES

BULLIES_SUCK

We hear about bullying among children in school settings and the damage it causes.

Less publicized is bullying that takes place among ADULTS!...in families, in the workplace and EVEN in social settings.

The Adult Bully

Following are actual comments regarding adult bullying:

“She was consistently condescending; she often insulted people or made critical comments about their dress, behavior…. She made derogatory comments about their character in front of others and behind their backs.

She saw it as strength and superiority. A number of people dropped from social circles where she was present rather than endure this treatment any longer.”

Bullies threaten people with veiled hints or outright intimidation. Abuse of power and harassment are common.

Adult bullies can be manipulative, mean, and spiteful. They have an inflated sense of their own worth. They enjoy discrediting and hurting.

They lack respect for people and feel little remorse when they launch character attacks, demean dignity, attack competence levels, or destroy trust and self-confidence.

Despite their arrogant demeanor, bullies, in truth, are people with low self-esteem and display aggressive behavior to mask their own insecurity, anger and resentment.

Adult bullies were once bullied themselves…often, they were bullied by their family and, similar to the domestic violence syndrome, they acquire bullying as a way of life themselves.

Types of Bullies

VERBAL BULLIES use words to hurt or humiliate others.

Verbal bullying includes name-calling, insulting, and constant teasing…and, bullies employ laughter and/or veiled humor to disguise mean, rude and hurtful comments, as if to say,

“Oh, I’m just joking…can’t you take a joke?”

This type of bullying is the easiest to inflict on others. It is quick and to the point.

CYBER_BULLYING

CYBER BULLIES send hateful emails and/or engage in cyber stalking.

SECONDARY BULLIES are people in a social or work group that react to a primary bully’s behavior. They start imitating and joining in the behavior themselves!
