We Must Help Manage Growth

by Peter Johnson, Amelia Island Association board member.

“Citizens of Nassau County have been as concerned as those in the rest of the state by the statistics of Florida’s economic downturn….

...Florida’s economic problems are both different and worse than the national mean.

Political answers…vary across the state, but in no case has there been an effort to reduce the housing inventory.

Quite the contrary, the solutions fostered by our [Fernandina Beach] elected political leaders have been to reduce impact fees and cut the price of building permits designed to increase construction – as if facilitating an increase in housing inventory is the answer to the problem.

...poorly thought-out economic policies are inevitably leading to higher taxes.

If we cannot count on continued population growth, we clearly should not be planning to rebuild the economy by building more houses….

...those who argue for continuing traditional current growth management policies will back a “Smart Growth” amendment (Amendment 3) to the Florida constitution. For details: click here .

Conversely, ”...is the Florida Hometown Democracy advocacy…Amendment 4.”

Peter Johnson concludes, “We have obligations as citizens to understand the differences and responsibility to sort out the facts from the fictions.”
