The Amelia Island Trail—Starting to Take Shape!

Our Amelia Island Trail Project Team with over 40 members has been busy developing plans for an Amelia Island Trail system.
The Team’s goal is to provide safe paths that support walkers, runners and bicyclists and to become the best place in Florida to bicycle safely. To review where we are…
The Amelia Island Trail system will be designated part of the East Coast Greenway Trail System once we improve our North-South trail paths along the ocean.
In fact, the river ferry service, connecting Georgia and Florida, has already been designated an official part of the East Coast Greenway (ECG) Trail system.
The ECG will be a multi-use trail from Maine to the Florida Keys, along the coast, that is being connected piece by piece as each community along the coast completes their portion of it.
The Amelia Island Trail system will be integrated into a county-wide trail system for all of Nassau County that includes potential future plans for connecting Kings Ferry, Bryceville, Callahan, Hilliard, Yulee, and O’Neil.
This county-wide trail plan, which hopefully can make use of some abandoned rail beds to create trails, will be proposed for inclusion in the county comprehensive plan.
Several key parts of the Amelia Island Trail system are already in place:
1. The 6+ mile Fort Clinch trail system
2. Bicycle lanes or sidewalks on Amelia Island Parkway.
3. Sidewalks on S. 8th St., S. 14th St., Sadler Rd.,Citrona Dr./Will Hardee Rd., and Atlantic Ave.
4. The Cumberland Sound Ferry service that provides a water-born connection for pedestrian and bicycle users for the 8 mile river trip between St. Marys, GA. and Fernandina Beach, FL.
