Why Malbec Wine?

Malbec, a red grape, originated in South West France, but found greater fame and a home in the New World. Say “Malbec( Mahl Beck) to a wine lover and the response is Argentina.

It is the great wine, the signature wine, of that country and the defining examples are found there. As Zinfandel and California are linked together, so are Malbec and Argentina. More than 70% of the world’s Malbec is grown there.

The variety was planted in Argentina in the early 1850’s but only in the most recent 20 years, has it been elevated and appreciated by the world outside Argentina. It is primarily exported to the U.S. and Canada.

The flavor profile includes soft tannins with a dense color therefore labeling it as one of the “black wines” usually associated with the Bordeaux region. You might find hints of dark coffee and blackberries although I am careful to say this since pepper in Zinfandel is the only standout taste I have encountered in tasting wines. Furthermore it is reasonably priced and overall quite a versatile wine.
